Welcome to Jarret Pottery where you will find one of a kind ceramic creations. The majority of my artwork is a low temperature quick firing process known a Raku. Western Raku was inspired by traditional Japanese Raku firing and introduced to the United States in 1960 by Paul Soldner. The word Raku translates to enjoyment, contentment, pleasure and happiness.
Western style Raku firing involves removing pottery from the kiln once it has reached the proper temperature, between 1200 and 1800 degrees depending on the glaze or style of Raku, and immediatley put into containers filled with combustible material such as newspaper, leaves, saw dust, etc., a lid is then placed on the container trapping the smoke inside. As the combustibles are starved of oxygen the carbon is forced into the glaze and clay body. Due to the intense thermal shock the clay goes through you often see "cracking" or crackling on the finished piece. This is normal and actually a desired outcome. |
